Everyone had to socially isolate themselves after the COVID 19 pandemic and work via various online platforms such as Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Google Meet, etc. As the effects of the pandemic begin to fade and people begin to live their lives as they did before, working online from home was something that a lot of people found comfortable. As a result, the “Hybrid work culture” which combines online and offline, in-person work was adopted by many organizations worldwide.

The term Hybrid Work Culture implies the method of getting work done via both online and in-person means. In this method, an employee would work an assigned number of days from home via the Internet and various applications which work on the Internet and the remaining number of days in a physical workplace. This model of working allows employees to be flexible concerning their work environments and allows them to work in close contact with their colleagues as well.

ADVANTAGES OF HYBRID WORK CULTURE

Naturally, the promise of a Hybrid Work Model has its advantages, they are as follows:-

  • Flexibility: As mentioned before, the work model gives employees flexibility. This flexibility mainly occurs in their work hours thus optimizing their work-life balance. When they work remotely, it takes commuting out of the equation and may also assist in decreasing stress levels, as a homely work environment would.
  • Increased productivity: The hybrid work model allows employees to utilize the benefits of both the distinct work modes, namely the decreased distractions and boosted productivity of the online mode and the level and communication and cooperation of the offline mode.
  • Reduced Expenditure: The Hybrid Work Model can reduce the overall expenditure for both employers and employees, as the organization will have to spend lesser capital on factors like rent, utilities like printers, furniture, and office supplies like paper, pens, and other stationery. The employees can reduce the expenses they incur like fuel costs while commuting, public transportation fees while commuting, etc.
  • Enhanced Work-Life Balance: As mentioned before, the Hybrid Work Model allows employees to have an optimized work-life balance. This is important as it helps employees reduce stress thus leading to better mental health. Better mental health helps increase productivity and boost job satisfaction.

DISADVANTAGES IN THE HYBRID WORK CULTURE

Naturally, like everything else, the Hybrid Work Model does not come without its share of disadvantages and challenges. They are as follows:

  • No In-Person Interaction: Remote working leads to an easily noticeable lack of direct, physical interaction. This can put a damper on the work environment which leads to an adverse effect on communication, collaboration, and consequently, productivity and morale. There is also a chance of miscommunications, which can affect progress.
  • Technological Barriers: To work in a hybrid manner, employees need to have the necessary facilities which are used to work remotely, such as a stable and fast internet connection as well as certain pieces of hardware such as a good camera, a good microphone, etc. The employees should also be well-versed in the use of these facilities to be able to easily overcome any hurdles they might encounter and the inability to do so could be a challenge to them.
  • Possibility of Burnouts: When a Hybrid Work Model is implemented and used for extended periods, there is a chance that it could blur an employee’s personal life and work life together. This could adversely affect their mental health, decrease productivity and eventually lead to burnout.

The organization should also wisely invest in any technology they feel is necessary for a Hybrid Work Model such as networking services, upgraded versions of conferencing software, Cloud-Storage software, Scheduling software, etc. Once the work model is put into action, the various parts of it should be recorded. These records can be used to modify the model to better suit the objectives of the company by modifying the policies, welding out weaknesses, and upgrading the technology to the necessary standards. With a thorough planning process, a nominal capital investment, and a good scrutiny of the process, a hybrid work model is something that any company can implement to better its future.
